TMI Core Material Option - Veneer Core Plywood

Industrial Grade

Particleboard

Meeting or exceeding the American National Standard ANSI A208.1 Grade M2 minimum physical property requirements, TMI particleboards are engineered to succeed in the laminate casework marketplace.

  • Density:  Average 45-50 lbs/ft3
  • Screw Hold Face:  202 lbs.
  • Screw Hold Edge:  180 lbs.

TMI Particleboard is available with attributes including: No Added Formaldehyde (NAF), Moisture Resistant (MR), and with Certified FSC Chain-of-Custody wood (FSC-C018082).

Particleboard is the core material that is recommended by the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) for laminate casework products.

TMI Core Material Option - Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

MDF (Medium

Density Fiberboard)

Meeting or exceeding the American National Standard ANSI A208.2 Grade 130 minimum physical property requirements, MDF boards are heavier and more expensive than industrial grade particleboard.

  • Density:  Average 48 lbs/ft3
  • Screw Hold Face:  300 lbs.
  • Screw Hold Edge:  275 lbs.

TMI MDF options are available with attributes including: No Added Formaldehyde (NAF), Moisture Resistant (MR), and with Certified FSC Chain-of-Custody wood.

MDF constitutes a small percentage of TMI production and is not a common core material specified for laminate casework products.

TMI Core Material Option - Combination Fiber Core (CFC) Plywood

Combination

Core Plywood

Combination Core Plywood, also called ComboCore, combines MDF outer faces with veneer core plywood inner-plies.  The MDF surfaces provide a smooth surface to laminate to, while the plywood inner-plies provide the strength of a more traditional plywood application.

TMI recognizes ComboCore Plywood as an exceptional substitution for traditional plywood, with characteristics that contribute to a high quality laminate casework product including:

  • More Stable, Flat, and non-Warping
  • Ability to apply Thermally Fused Laminate (TFL)
  • More Budget Friendly

TMI ComboCore Plywood options are available with attributes including: No Added Formaldehyde (NAF), and with Certified FSC Chain-of-Custody wood.

TMI Core Material Option - Veneer Core Plywood

Veneer Core

Plywood

In the laminate casework industry, traditional veneer core plywood is not recommended as a viable core material by many manufacturers.  The Architectural Woodwork Institute states that plywood will not be warrantied against deflection or delamination when utilized for door and drawer faces.

Veneer core plywoods tend to be unstable, in a manufacturing process which demands a stable, flat laminating surface.  Thickness tolerances are not consistent, where accuracy is measured down to 1/10th of a millimeter.  Thermally fused laminate (TFL) cannot be applied to plywood, in an industry in which cost of finished goods is very important.

When veneer core plywoods are required, TMI recommends 9-ply birch hardwood plywood, or an equivalent plywood solution.
